Cosmos opened its doors on 17 January 1989 and was officially inaugurated on 30 May 1990 by the first Prime Minister of the Republic of Namibia, Dr Hage Geingob. Its education is provided on a three-pillar basis: vocational (including Secretarial studies, Hair Care, Catering, Fashion Design and Nature Conservation); academic and technical. The first principal was Mr J.van Wyk.


The name COSMOS is derived from the UNIVERSE. The word “unity” comes from “universe” which means the arrangements of parts in harmony to form a complete whole in agreement of aims and feelings of belonging. COSMOS is also derived from the word “cosmopolitan” meaning being free from national prejudice because of wide experience of the world. The school allows learners of all races, nationalities and cultures. Cosmopolitan characteristics are humane, stressing acts of kindness to family, friends and other people. [1]


The school's mission is to place the well being of the learners as their first priority and to enable the learners to develop their full pontential. The vision of the school is to strive to provide support and appriciation to each individual student's needs in a working environment where learners can experience academic success and prepare for post secondary education , the world of work and life changes. [2]

In January 2008 the school implimented an inclusive education,when they included the first group of hearing impaired learners in January 2008 in grade 11. [3]. The school occupied the 13th place out of 33 secondary schools in the region durinng the academic year of 2010. The school further made history when a grade 12 student Aron Nanzimbongo scooped the overall performer in 6 NSSC ordinary level subjects.[4] [5]
