The Road Not Taken

edit

http://blogs.redeyechicago.com/show-patrol/2009/05/04/fringe_jasika_nicole/ - He’s called her by her real name one time, and then he started going back [to calling her other names]. He called me Astrid; that was a really funny moment. [MINI SPOILER: He calls her Astrid in Tuesday's episode.]

When he does call her by her real name, it’s going to be a connection that’s super important to him. It’s just more proof he’s not crazy. Yes, he was institutionalized and he was in a bad place for many years. But he’s not a crazy person, you know, he’s completely in his right mind. And I think that that is just a little bit more proof for everybody. He’s OK, he’s going to be OK. … He’s there, it’s just a matter of having patience with him.

I think I've likened it before to licorice -- not everyone likes licorice, but the people who do like it really, really like licorice. Our show is like licorice. You may love it. If you don't, that's all right, there's chocolate too."

The premise of Fringe deals with the idea of two universes, who mirror each other in many ways but still possess subtle differences. In his past research, Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble) discovered the existence of a parallel universe, invented a window to peak into it, and ran experiments on children using a drug called Cortexiphan to allow them to travel between universes. In 1985, Walter worked simultaneously with his doppelganger, an unknowing "Walternate", as both of their sons lay dying of an incurable disease. Walter discovered a cure only after the Peter from our world succumbed to the disease, and traveled to the Other Side to at least save Walternate's son. However, circumstances forced him to bring this Peter back to his own lab to save him, and he was persuaded by his grieving wife Elizabeth to keep the boy. This single event led to the catastrophic unraveling of the parallel universe, as it became plagued by singularities occurring at various weakened points, such as Madison Square Garden and Harvard University. To solve this, Walternate has been the instigator of a war against our world to save his universe and destroy ours, causing many of the fringe cases the FBI from our world has investigated throughout the past two seasons.

Walter has previously discovered a window to look into a parallel universe that mirrors his own excepting some subtle differences, Walter worked simultaneously with an unknowing "Walternate", as both of their sons are dying of an incurable disease. Walter discovers a cure in 1985 only after the Peter from our world died from the disease, and travels to the Other Side to save Walternate's son. However, he is forced to bring their Peter to his world to save him, and is persuaded by his wife Elizabeth to keep the boy. This single event led to the unraveling of the parallel universe, as it is plagued by singularities occurring at weakened points of their world. To solve this, Walternate has been involved in a war against our world to save his universe and destroy ours, causing many of the fringe cases the FBI has investigated.

In Season 2, the occurrences are found to be in conjunction with activities of a parallel universe, which is plagued by singularities occurring at weakened points of their world. The Fringe team deals with more cases that are leading to a "great storm" as the parallel universe appears to be at war with the prime one. Walter is forced to tell Peter that he is from the parallel universe, a replacement for his own Peter that died from a genetic disease, and that it is his prior experiments that caused the singularities in the parallel universe.[4]
