Idiot's guide to reducing the size of an image for non free PDF files.
Ideally this is for single page PDFs. Need to have PDF editor (Acrobat, NuancePDF, etc.) and Photoshop or similar able to reduce TIFF
- Use the guideline at WP:Image resolution to work out the new size - height is hhh, width is www.
- Work out the reduction factor = old width/new width
- Download the PDF file
- With a PDF editor save as TIFF
- Open TIFF with Photoshop and reduce by the factor chosen (often the photoshop size will not be the same as the PDF size - hence the need to calculate the factor.)
- Save TIFF
- In Explorer - right mouse and "convert to PDF"
- Upload as new version
- Edit and change {{non-free reduce}} to {{subst:orfurrev}}
Finished.
Example
- File:Canadian International Council Official Logo.pdf
- Wiki size 587 x 316
- Guideline is 431 x 232
- Factor is 1.3619
- Photoshop shows TIFF as 1175 x 634
- Reduced to 862 x 465
- Uploaded results in 431 × 233
