Christ Apostolic Church, is a Pentecostal Evangelical church which trace its existence from the ministry of the late Apostle Peter Anim the originator of Ghanaian Pentecostalism[1]. It has a humble beginning as a prayer group started in 1917 as Asamankesse but later got affiliation with Apostolic Church Bradford.[2]
History
editThe church claims that Peter Anim Newman began a healing ministry in 1917 under the name Faith Tabernacle as a result of healing received from acute stomach upset and guinea worms infections after he had read a magazine published by Faith Tabernacle USA called "Sword of Spirit".[1]
In 1931, Anim through a fellow Faith Tabernacle minister in Nigeria David O. Odubanjo contacted missionaries of the Apostolic Church of Bradford, to pay his team a visit. Rev George Perfect a missionary sent by Apostolic Church Bradford to Nigeria, passed by Asamankesse in Ghana and stay with the Faith Tabernacle church for two weeks. An agreement was met between George Perfect and Peter Anim. Also Peter Anim and his members fully embraced the doctrine and practices of the Apostolic Church Bradford. Hence, Anim's church became The Apostolic Church Gold Coast. A year later, as the church claims, a major "Holy Ghost Outpouring' was experienced. Healing, miracles and salvation was greatly recorded and therefore impacted the growth of the ministry numerically.[3]
They requested for an external missionary from Bradford, which was granted in 1937, James McKeown, was sent as the first Pentecostal missionary from UK to Asamankese.[4]
The church by then practices strictly divine healing. James McKeown had suffered from malaria and subsequently hospitalized in the European Hospital in Ghana. He responded to treatment succesfully. However, he faced hostility from the Church which felt betrayed by their missionary had receive medical treatment against the teachings of the church. This disagreement led the church into division. The followers of James McKeown remained Apostolic Church Bradford while the followers of Anim became Christ Apostolic Church[5]
Beliefs
editThe Christ Apostolic Church believes that God is revealed in The Unity of the Godhead and the Trinity of the persons therein, man's deprave nature, the need for repentance and Regeneration, and the Eternal Doom of the finally impenitent. The Virgin Birth, sinless Life, Atoning death, Resurrection, Ascension and Abiding Intercession of Jesus Christ, Justification and Sanctification.
Also, the church believes in The Baptism of the Holy Ghost and the nine gifts the edification, exhortation and comfort of the Church, which is the Body of Christ, Baptism by immersion, of the Lord’s Supper, the Divine Inspiration and Authority of the Holy Scriptures.
Furthermore, Church Government by Apostles, Prophets, Evangelist, Pastors, Teachers, Elders and Deacons. The possibility of falling from Grace. Tithes and Offerings, Divine Healing and finally Faith in God the Jehovah “Jireh” [6]
