The Mount Academy is a private Christian high school in Esopus, New York.[2] The school opened in 2012 on the site of the former Mount St. Alphonsus seminary and is operated by the Bruderhof Communities, and serves around 200 students.

Facility

The main building housing the Mount Academy was built between 1904 and 1907 as a seminary for the Redemptorist religious order.[3] The site was a working farm overlooking the Hudson River. The seminary operated until 1985, when it was closed due to declining enrollment.[4] From 1985 to 2012, the building was used as a retreat center.[3]

The facility was converted to a high school through extensive renovations in 2012. Renovations included environmentally-friendly features such as a wood chip heating system.[5] Although the Bruderhof is an anabaptist protestant community, the renovation included restoration of the chapel,[6] organ,[7] and bells.[8]

Athletics

The Mount Academy has slowly expanded its athletic programs as resources allow. The school does not recruit students on the basis of athletics.[9] The school competes in Section IX in the Mid-Hudson Athletic League in Cross Country, Soccer, and Volleyball.[10]

The Mount has enjoyed considerable success in competition:

    • State Champions Class D 2012, 2013; Class C 2017[11][10]
  • Boys Soccer
    • State Champions Class C 2017[12]
    • State Runner-up Class C 2018[13]
  • Girls Volleyball
    • State Quarterfinalist Class D 2018[14]
