Development and pre-production

edit

CJ Entertainment announced the development of a reality show with the working title, Clouds of Ulzzang in early 2010. The company invited a number of different Japanese girl groups to partake in the show, however all groups declined the offer. In October 2010, it was announced that rookie rock band, Led Apple, would be taking part as the main stars of the show. Following the announcement, Led Apple later announced that they would no longer be taking part in the show due to conflicting issues between their label, Startory, and CJ Entertainment. In February 2011, CJ Entertainment announced that the show would be put on hold indefinitely.

In September 2011, CJ Entertainment brought the show back into production with the company announcing that they had cast a new idol group to join the show. They later revealed that filming would begin later in the month and that the show would air on cable channel, Mnet by the end of the year. The boy band Resowave was later announced to be partaking in the show, with it being renamed Resowave Ulzzang Clouds. In November 2011, it was revealed that CJ Entertainment had sold the rights of the show to upcoming cable channel, JTBC and it would air in early 2012. The show's budget is an estimated 1.03 billion KRW (900,000 USD) and Resowave is getting paid around 4.4 million KRW (3,800 USD) an episode.

Filming and production

edit

Filming commenced in February 2012 after a number of delays, namely due to Kim Beom's health problems and eventual indefinite leave from Resowave activites. The group, apart from Kim Beom, filmed promotional photoshoots for the show on March 17, 2012 and attended a wrap-up banquet hosted by the production crew afterwards. Due to Kim Beom leaving the show, Lee Chi-hoon and Lee Hyun-woo were featured more prominently on the show.

CJ Entertainment and JTBC decided to use a viral marketing campaign in order to garner media attention for the show. During the month of April in 2012, CJ Entertainment released a number of teasers for the show, all featuring different members of the group. A total of twelve teasers were released, with a cumulative total of more than 19 million views on YouTube. In addition to that, on the show's official website, fans were given the opportunity to pre-order a poster of the group, with 30 signed posters to be given away randomly.
