Anneken Hendriks (also known as Anna Heyndriksdochter o Anneke de Vlaster; 1522 - November 10,1571, Amsterdam) was a Dutch housewife who converted to Anabaptism in 1552.[1]
In October 1571, when she was 53 years old, she was betrayed in Amsterdam by a neighbor. This led to her being interrogated, tortured (to try to get the names of other Mennonites), and sentenced to death.
The execution took place on November 10, and the executioner was ordered to fill her mouth with gunpowder, tie her to a ladder, and throw her face down into a bed of burning coals. Her death was illustrated in a copper engraving by Jan Luyken and published in the Mirror of Martyrs.
