Trisomy 21
editTrisomy twenty one better known as down syndrome is a condition that results from the presence of an extra copy or part of a copy of chromosome twenty one. Its the result of an error during cell division called non-disjunction. The risk of a baby being born with down syndrome increases with the mothers age, although what causes this correlation is still in question.[3] Ninety percent of chromosome tweenty one trisomy was maternal, compared to only four percent being paternal. [4] It is believed that telomere length attrition may be associated with the occurance of non-disjunction of chromosome twenty one during the stages of meiosis I and meiosis II. [3]
