I chose to compare the English page for extended family with the Finnish page of the same name. I know that the Finnish culture does not view the extended family the way we do in America. Finns tend to focus on the nuclear family and normally don't have other relatives living in the house with them. Here in America, kids are often raised by their grandparents and it's not uncommon to have an unmarried aunt or uncle living with you. The Finnish page mentions that living with an extended family is often practiced by families who believe that using contraception is a sin. Granted, the translation may be off, but I definitely do not follow that comparison. The Finnish article also says that extended families create an agricultural society, but that isn't always the case in America. The Finnish article concludes with saying that extended families were more common in the early 1900s in Finland than they are now. The English article offers many different scenarios on how an extended family is formed and goes on to talk about extended families in other societies. The Finnish article seemed to only focus on Finland, which was expected, whereas the English article incorporated ideas from other cultures. I was actually surprised that the English page included "complex family" as one of its sections. This term is used when talking about families that have more than two adults living in the house, usually in a polygamous situation.
