My name is Maddie and I am a Freshman business student who works at a makeup store, which is dangerous for me since I am a makeup addict and spend a considerable amount of my paycheck at the store. I have an interest in animals, particularly birds (my favorite bird is the African grey parrot). I also love Korean food with every fiber of my being. If i could eat Korean food every day I would be content. I watch a lot of TV shows from cheesy sitcoms to Sci-Fi mega dramas. I'm currently binge watching Modern Family and I'm obsessed.

Article Critique

edit

I was looking through the list of parrots, and found that the lesser known birds had articles that were not as well developed as the more well-known varieties. I visited the Niam-Niam Parrot page on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: the lack of citations, a poorly written description with grammatical errors, and the lack of information on the behavior of the parrot.

Citations

edit

There are no citations on the page and only one reference. This page is part of the WikiProject Birds, but I found that a lot of pages apart of this project were missing citations. What I believe is happening on this page and others, is that an ornithologist probably made the page and thought that since they are an expert in this field, they don’t need to cite other research. However, Wikipedia does not work this way. Citations are an important aspect to keeping Wikipedia honest.

The Description

edit

Under the description sub-heading, the editor wrote “Head plumage is mainly brown while the neck is a of olive and yellow color.” I believe they meant to write that the neck is an olive and yellow color. Also they follow this up with “Mostly olive/brown breast color. Along with green underwing feathers and dull green tail plumage.” I feel like this sentence’s structure should be improved. Perhaps by rewriting the sentences as: The Niam-Niam parrot has a breast that is a mostly olive-brown color, with  green underwing feathers and dull green tail plumage.

Behavior

edit

There is very little information about the bird in general, but I’m particular perplexed at the lack of information on the behavior of the bird. Most other bird pages include the breeding habits and the diet of the sub-species, as well as whether the bird would make a good pet or its relations with humans.

summary

edit

Sadly like many pages for smaller bird species, this article is lacking in many ways. The article as no citations, a hastily written description, and no information on behavior. However I see in the history that editors are working to improve this article and others in the project, which gives me hope that Wikipedia will soon be a great Ornithological resource in the future.
