Hospital Playlist is a South Korean medical drama television series written by Lee Woo-jung and directed by Shin Won-ho. The series follows the lives of five doctors in their forties, Lee Ik-jun (Jo Jung-suk), Ahn Jeong-won (Yoo Yeon-seok), Kim Jun-wan (Jung Kyung-ho), Yang Seok-hyeong (Kim Dae-myung), and Chae Song-hwa (Jeon Mi-do), working at Yulje Medical Center. The series starts in medias res

The first season aired on tvN from March 12 to May 28, 2020. Shin decided to air one episode a week for twelve weeks instead of following the standard broadcast programming employed for other South Korean television productions. Episodes became available for streaming on Netflix in the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, and English-speaking countries immediately after their television broadcast. The second season aired on tvN from June 17 to September 16, 2021, following the same broadcast programming. The production company released the director's cut of both seasons on Blu-Ray on July 6, 2023.[1][2][3]

The series starts with the hospitalization and subsequent death of Yulje's chairman. Song-hwa and Jun-wan discover at the funeral that the chairman's youngest son is their friend Jeong-won. He is set to inherit his father's position with the support of the board of directors, but he gives it up to the more experienced director of Yulje Foundation, Joo Jong-soo, on the condition that he will receive all the profits from the VIP wards. Song-hwa, Jun-wan, Ik-jun accept to work at the VIP wards with Jeong-won, while Seok-hyeong says he will only accept if they reunite their band. Jeong-won blackmails Jun-wan into joining and convinces Song-hwa to agree, on the condition that she will be the band's vocalist. Their first practice session brings back memories of when they first met during med school. Meanwhile, Song-hwa helps a woman whose mother has been diagnosed with cancer and whose son needs a liver transplant. After one of his patients dies, Jeong-won drunkenly reiterates that he wants to resign and become a priest. His eldest brother, a priest himself, advises him to wait one more year. Jun-wan discovers that Song-hwa's boyfriend is cheating on her.

Song-hwa and her boyfriend break up after Jun-wan pressures him into confessing his infidelity. Professor of neurosurgery and television star Min Gi-joon starts working at the hospital and is scheduled to lead a difficult surgery. Chief resident in neurosurgery Yong Seok-min begs Song-hwa to operate instead since professor Min is not familiar with the procedure. Song-hwa tells Seok-min that the patient has to personally request the surgery be conducted by her to avoid conflicts with Min. Seok-min tries to convince the patient but he is later scolded by Song-hwa for his rude attitude. Song-hwa ends up asking Min to assist him during surgery, even though she also has to operate a high school friend. Two new third-year medical students, Jang Yun-bok and Jang Hong-do, observe the procedures. Jeong-won scolds general surgery resident Jang Gyeo-ul after witnessing her blunt and almost rude attitude while talking to a patient's relative. However, his opinion of her changes after seeing her dedication to the patients' wellbeing. The group attends the funeral of chairman Joo's wife, where they discover that Seok-hyeong was in love with Seong-hwa during medical school.

Jun-wan urgently schedules a patient's procedure on the day of his daughter's wedding. He later attends the wedding in his stead. Jun-wan also has to operate two neonates, but one of the surgeries is postponed due to complications. Despite the apparently indifferent attitude of the young parents, he talks to them and consoles the mother, who has tried to appear strong to avoid criticism of the overbearing grandmothers. Yun-bok and Hong-do observe Jun-wan's surgeries. Ik-jun invites the others to karaoke during the weekend, but they are all busy. Ik-jun and Jun-wan discover a recommendation letter on Jeong-won's laptop, evidence that he seriously intends to resign. Ik-jun shares stories about Jeong-won with Gyeo-ul, who is in love with him. After returning from Germany, Ik-jun's wife asks him for divorce. One of Ik-jun's patients is discharged, but he is victim of a traffic accident on Children's Day and his family decides to donate the organs. Ik-jun waits until midnight to start surgery to avoid ruining the day for his son. Ik-jun's sister, Ik-sun, is injured in a traffic accident. Seong-hwa puts on the spot resident in neurosurgery Ahn Chi-hong with numerous questions, but he still decides to join on her camping trip, despite the heavy rain.

Ik-sun is treated by Jun-wan and encounters her best friend from military school, Chi-hong. Assistant professor of emergency medicine Bong Gwang-hyun shares stories about the professors, including the formation of their band, with Gyeo-ul, Chi-hong, and resident in obstetrics and gynecology Chu Mi-na. An Indonesian patient does not have the documents necessary to get financial assistance for his surgery so Chi-hong and Song-hwa contact the Daddy-Long-Legs relief program, secretly operated by Jeong-won with the profits from the VIP wards. Jeong-won's mother Ro-sa does not support his decision to become a priest. Mi-na thinks that Seok-hyeong is insensitive but she is surprised by his kind gesture toward a patient. Song-hwa, Jun-wan, and Ik-jun talk about Seok-hyeong's past: his sister died suddenly, his father had an affair, and his mother had a stroke which lead him to grow extremely close to his mother. Jeong-won suspects that two children are being abused by their father due to unsual bruises. A congressman is admitted to the VIP ward to receive a liver transplant from his son, a friend of Ik-jun, but he suspects that the donor is an impostor. Jun-wan visits Ik-sun.

The congressman admits to having hired an impostor, an employee of Seok-hyeong's father, since his son refused to donate his liver. The group's band practice is interrupted by two emergencies. Ik-jun has to convince a patient to go through with his liver transplant. The staff of the obstetrics and gynecology department organizes a birthday party for Seok-hyeong. A new professor of cardiothoracic surgery, Cheon Myung-tae, starts working at Yulje. Jeong-won spends time with his mother, chairman Joo, the director of Yulje, and Seok-hyeong's mother. Jun-wan confesses his feelings to Ik-sun. The father of Ik-jun's ex-girlfriend and celebrity Goo A-ra is admitted to the VIP ward and scheduled to be operated by Ik-jun. Seok-hyeong meets his father's mistress, who asks him to convince his mother to divorce since she is pregnant. Song-hwa suspects that Chi-hong likes her and ends up rejecting him. She fears she has cancer and undergoes a biopsy.

Jeong-won's mother visits the hospital, while he worries about a neonate in need of a liver transplant. Chief resident in cardiothoracic surgery Do Jae-hak signs a long-term lease, using all of his life savings and he later performs his first surgery. Gwang-hyun shares new informations about the professors with Gyeo-ul, Mi-na, Chi-hong, and Jaek-hak. When Gyeo-ul has an allergic reaction, many professors come check on her but, to her dismay, Jeong-won just sends a text. Seok-hyeong consoles a mother who had a miscarriage. Mi-na tries to spend time with Seok-hyeong. Accompanied by Ik-jun, Song-hwa goes to get the result of her biopsy and discovers she has a benign tumor. Flashbacks show Song-hwa and Ik-jun's relationship in medical school and the impact of Seok-hyeong's confession. Ik-sun accepts to be Jun-wan's girlfriend.

Chi-hong's first surgery is difficult and Song-hwa has to take over. During an awake craniotomy, he shares with a patient the reason why he left the military. Professor Cheon and other professors of cardiothoracic surgery get in trouble with the hospital for misusing the company credit card. Jeong-won rejects Gyeo-ul's invitation to dinner. Seok-hyeong initially convinces his mother to divorce but she changes her mind after Seok-hyeong's father is hospitalized at Yulje. A patient stops taking medications after she discovers that her husband, who donated his liver to her, cheated on her. Talking about his own divorce, Ik-jun convices her to resume the treatment.

Jeong-won's recommendation letter is accepted by a parish in Naples, Italy, but his mother opposes his decision. Gyeo-ul is admonished after accusing a patient of being a drug addict. She decides to stop pursuing Jeong-won and Min-ha sets her up with a friend. Jae-hak discovers he has been scammed and has to move out. He ends up losing his temper with a patient's relative and subsequently submits his resignation letter. After becoming the chief of the cardiothoracic surgery department, Jun-wan ignores Jae-hak's resignation letter, refuses to punish him harshly and instead apologizes in his place. He also asks the parents of a neonate patient with an unknown condition to donate his heart to the hospital and attends the baby's funeral. Resident in obstetrics and gynecology Myung Eun-won disappears and Min-ha has to take her night shifts. After coming back, Eun-won continues to dump her work on Min-ha. After handling a sudden case of placental abruption, Min-ha and Seok-hyeong open up about their feelings and discuss her recent conflict with Eun-won. Seok-hyeong's mother is urgently hospitalized.

Ik-sun tells Jun-wan she applied for an overseas doctorate program. Song-hwa urgently operates a teenager and later brings a gift to the opening of her mother's yoga studio. An intern, Seong-yeong, mistakenly shaves a patient's head for a procedure. Ik-jun does not accept a patient's father as a donor for a liver transplant due to his fatty liver and old age. Ik-jun thinks the man has given up, but he returns after having lost more than five kilograms. Impressed by the man's sacrifice, he accepts to perform the surgery. Chi-hong tells Ik-jun of Ik-sun's complicated past relationship. Ro-sa brings Chairman Joo to the group's band practice to cheer him up, since he is experiencing symptoms of depression.
