Derry Cage Nyakane
Derry Cage Nyakane (born May 21, 1991) is a South African director, screenwriter, musician, actor and author. He is known for his distinct technique of blending surrealist films with naturalistic, hand-held psychological thrillers.
Born to a middle-class rural family in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, Nyakane spent his childhood making amateur films, before going on to study motion picture medium and live performance at AFDA in Johannesburg, where he made the transition to study film directing at CityVarsity. After developing a technique, he produced his first psychological thriller Foetus (2011). He moved to Cape Town, where after completing his graduation film, he declared his debut feature film is veiled with autobiographical references, surrealist filmmaking, and non-linear narrative: the psychological thriller Logic of Dreams is set to to released in 2016.
Next, Nyakane founded his advertising and entertainment agency, the admired On Duty Entertainment (Pty) Ltd. Turning towards commercial rather than just plain art films. Meanwhile, Nyakane embraced the internet as a medium, sourcing talent, producing several prohects, such as Mandla Fab's music video 'This Is' and the surreal short film Dead Night (2012).
