Implications of Possible Police Strike

edit

“Improved pay for the Police was allegedly promised by the Former Minister of Safety and Security, Nicky Iyambo”.(Namibian newspaper, Friday October 05,2012) Police Officers have to rent as there is not enough accommodation for all Police officers, they have to buy food monthly, they have to buy electricity, they have to pay for kids school fees, they have to put fuel in their cars and the prices of all these necessities have increased throughout the years but the salaries of officers remained consistent for a few years now. And now Police officers want to strike as they cannot handle all they expenses anymore and because the Minister promised them an increment years ago.

I as a Police officer totally understand them, the frustration of all the waiting. But as Police officers we are not allowed by law to strike and the consequences of such an act is that an officer can be fired with immediate effect.”It’s an offense to that can get you a red card from the force.”(Ndeitunga, The Namibian, 05 October2012) And another reason why they want to strike is because other company workers did that and then got an increment, they want to try their luck. Basic Police functions include to protect life and property, to maintain law and order, to prevent crime, investigate offense or alleged offense [1] and the preservation of the internal security of Namibia.(Sgt Farmer, Police Science,2007)So as a police officer I would like to advice my fellow college’s to be patient as good things come to those who wait. Our Inspector General will do his best to get us that increment. [2]
