I believe knowledge and understanding would be enhanced if a wiki environment was created where research in areas like science and mathematics could take place collaboratively. In those areas, there are recognized standards for validity, so we are not dealing with people's opinions. Those standards are theory justified by experimental results and mathematics justified by proof. Unlike the Wikipedia, one wouldn't need a rule about waiting for some unbiased person to write about other people's works. As I’m sure you are aware, such required references for Wikipedia articles may be a long time coming or may never appear.
Let me give an example of the kind of research project I think would be suitable for this proposed wiki. If you do a Bing search on "date algorithm", you will find a collection of pages (linked from http://mysite.verizon.net/aesir_research/date/date0.htm) that is essentially a long article of mine about the basis for computer algorithms that calculate different kinds of calendar dates. It appears to be the only article on the net that includes proofs for the various algorithms. It is true that those searching for such algorithms can currently find this work, and everyone is free to use the algorithms (including a novel one I invented) at no charge. However, I won't live forever, and it would be nice to have this work available past my lifetime. In addition, with new programming languages, there will always be a need to update the article.
I think the date algorithm pages would be perfect for a wiki environment. I have written similar articles in other scientific and mathematics areas and I'm sure there are thousands of such articles written by other people who would be pleased to donate them to such an environment. I just don't know how or where that might happen. Yes, we can sometimes find publications to accept such work, but these publications are typically obscure, require a subscription, and they don't provide communal ownership and development.
