His paintings explore enigmatic narratives endowed with a powerful tension. Bonell’s images only reveal so much, leaving us bemused, curious and even bewitched. Despite the familiar or ordinary elements in his work, we are always confronted with oddities, abnormalities, and strangeness.  The barrier between what we know and what we don’t, blurs. By introducing mystery to his work, Bonell provokes a sense of unease, of "Umheimlich", leaving us to our speculations, but never with the full truth.
