The 1895 Epsom Derby was the XXXth running of The Derby. It took place on 29 May 1895 on Epsom Downs in Surrey, England, and was won by Sir Visto, trained by Mathew Dawson and ridden by Sam Loates. The race is believed to be the first Derby,[1] and arguably the first news event,[2] to have been captured on film, by cinematographer Birt Acres.
