User:Pdebee/typos/hyphen restored to ‘hurdy-gurdy’

Project overview

edit

On 7 January 2015, I decided to start restoring the hyphen to the word hurdy-gurdy, as per the Oxford English Dictionary, wherever it had been omitted when referring to the musical instrument in Wikipedia. I have been playing this instrument for a few years now, and I therefore always thought that articles in our encyclopedia ought to spell its name correctly and in accordance with the OED's accepted standard.

It turns out that the instrument is mentioned in many articles, and very often without the hyphen. Therefore, I resolved to adopt this as a typo to nurture, and I have now set up a new subpage (containing the typo search link) and also the present subpage to keep track of my progress. [21:56, 4 February 2015 (UTC)]

I completed this task yesterday [23 February 2015], at which time there were 656 searched articles containing at least one occurrence of 'hurdy-gurdy' in any of its various spellings: (H/h)urdy-(G/g)urd(y/-ies), with or without the hyphen.

Of these, the 251 articles listed below included 463 instances of the typo, specifically in reference to the musical instrument. Many other articles, among the initial 656, contain the titles of creative works that also misspelt the word 'hurdy-gurdy', but these instances of the typo can obviously not be corrected.

I will continue to check regularly for new instances of this typo, and to fix them in references to the musical instrument itself.
However, for now, I am pleased to declare "Mission accomplished!"

With kind regards;
