[edit] Academics:
Through a philosophy of a balanced curriculum, students become lifelong learners. PS 84 has a child-centered, diverse environment fosters self-confidence and respect, and our well-rounded curriculum ensures that all children meet their full academic potential. Working closely with parents and with Williamsburg’s talented community, we nurture the social, emotional, and educational lives of our students.
The school is having great success with the Balanced Literacy strategy of literacy education. Balanced Literacy employs the Reading and Writing Workshop Model to ensure that students develop a love of reading and writing while progressing at their own speed.
PS 84 is lucky to have a wide array of “specials.” All students participate in arts, literacy, science, fitness classes, social studies, and computer programs (in an up-to-the-minute computer lab stocked with Macs) taught by experienced teachers. Students also benefit from multiple partnerships with community arts groups.
Movement has been made a priority at PS 84. In addition to regular gym and recess periods, the children are constantly moving between classroom centers, keeping their attention fresh. To this end, the school recently unveiled a brand new student fitness center. In 2011, our kindergartners began receiving movement classes from professional dancers. Older students participate in dancing classrooms and compete in area ballroom dancing competitions.
