Eugene Mele is a professor of physics at the University of Pennsylvania, specialising in the theory of quantum electronic phenomena in condensed matter. In collaboration with Charles L. Kane, he predicted the quantum spin-hall effect and coined the term topological insulator, which was awarded the 2019 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.[1]
