Biography

edit

Jules Eugène Pages was born in San Francisco, California on May 16, 1867. As a youth, he worked as an apprentice in his father's engraving business in San Francisco and absorbed the artistic milieu there. In 1888, he did as many American artists of the time; he traveled to Paris to study under Lefebvre (1836–1911), Fleury (1837-1912), and Constant (1845–1902) at Académie Julian. Upon returning to San Francisco, Pages was employed as an illustrator at several newspapers, the Examiner and the Call. He returned to Paris and began teaching night classes at Académie Julian in 1902. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1910. He exhibited at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition (1915, San Francisco) and was a member of the international jury of awards. Pages lived in France for over 40 years and served as the director at Académie Julian. As World War II broke out in Europe, Pages returned to San Francisco. He died there on May 22, 1946.[1][2]
