Article Evaluation

edit

 the Gestational Hypertension article:

  • Article flows in a logical manner and all headings are relevant and important to the topic
  • Most all sections are rather short and brief
  • The article is incredibly neutral in tone and presents no subjective or biased information
  • The citations I checked hyperlinked to the correct sources, all of which were credible
  • A large portion of the article is about evolutionary considerations, but sections such as prevention and treatment lack information
  • references and citations are easy to access and are located at the end of each statement or sentence
  • This article does not include the sections a research article would, such as the ones we've reviewed in class, and lacks some areas of information
  • Information provided is relevant to the topic and useful to me as a student interested in the topic.

Possible Topics

edit

Lacks information on signs/symptoms and diagnosis. Could add new sections on these

A section about types of barcode administration or contradictions against it could be added

Includes information about screening in the UK, but none in the United States. This could be added to. Additionally, the research section could be updated as it lacks more recent sources

Heading: Signs and Symptoms:

No single diagnostic test currently exists to predict the likelihood of developing gestational hypertension. High blood pressure is the major sign in diagnosing gestational hypertension. Protein in the urine, proteinuria, is a key indicator of the condition. Some women with gestational hypertension may present asymptomatic, but a number of symptoms are associated with the condition.[1]

Symptoms

  • Edema
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Blurred vision or sensitivity to light
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Persistent headaches
  • Increased blood pressure

Wikipedia Reflection

Wikipedia Project Reflection

For the Wikipedia page assignment, I chose to critique, edit, and contribute to the article “Gestational Hypertension”. I found this article to be both interesting and relevant in healthcare. However, the article itself was rather short and lacking in vital information that would be valuable to someone curious in the topic and searching for information. I planned to add information in a number of sections, create more citations for existing information in the article, and add an additional header. From here, I began to draft my article contribution and further research the topic.

As I critiqued an article, I used the guiding questions for the assignment. I evaluated not only the content and credibility of the information, but also the format and order of information being presented. During the article evaluation, I found that not all Wikipedia articles are full of information. The article I chose to evaluate, Gestational Hypertension, had credible information, but was rather lacking in content. However, I did find that the article was presented in a logical format that made sense to the reader. I decided to add a number of missing citations as well as added information under the “risk factor” heading.

For the article “Gestational Hypertension”, I added a number of edits. The first thing I did was research to find citations for a few sections that lacked them in order to ensure the entire article was cited properly. I additionally added information I found related to the “risk factors” heading. My biggest contribution was to adding a “signs and symptoms” header, as the article lacked one and many other articles about health conditions contain one. Signs and symptoms are a large aspect of a disease process, and the information seemed important and relevant to the topic of gestational hypertension. I found a number of new sources to add to the article one may use to find additional information on the subject by adding this section as well. With the addition of this header, I felt the article seemed more complete. Although my section was not particularly long, it made an important contribution to the topic by adding information that is valuable to the reader interested in the topic. Compared to earlier versions of the article, my contributions helped make the article look more credible with the addition of citations, updated information, and more thorough topics.

From contributing to Wikipedia, I found that it’s incredibly simple to add information to articles. The entire process feels much less intimidating now that I’ve done it myself. However, although articles can be peer reviewed and monitored, information may easily be added to an article that may not necessarily be true or from a trusted source. One must proceed with caution when gaining information from a Wikipedia article, and ensure the original source of the material is reliable.

Compared to similar research projects, I found that the open format of articles was a good difference. Anyone can comment or contribute to an article, making each one a group effort from students and scholars alike. While the research and writing aspect was very similar, with each article edited, I would only contribute to a single section rather than broadly cover an entire subject. It was interesting to hone in and research a single aspect of a topic rather than generally write about multiple aspects of gestational hypertension. Having quick feedback from peers and other contributors was useful in improving the content of the article that I contributed and helped with accuracy and quality of the material.

With the addition of information of the gestational hypertension article, others interested in the topic will be able to gather more information from the source Wikipedia provides. It’s important that Wikipedia articles contain accurate, researched information from credible sources as the project instructed us to find, as many people use the website as a source of information.
