Paraphrase of HowStuffWorks sleep article
editA person will emit different types of brainwaves dependent on their state. In an awake state, a person will emit alpha-waves when relaxed, and beta-waves when alert. Alpha waves oscillates constantly at about 10 cycles per second, while beta waves oscillates twice as fast. One way to measure brainwave-activity is by using an instrument called a electroencephalograph.
