The Von Tiki is a tiki drink that first appeared in 1998's Beachbum Berry's Grog Log,[1][2] a pivotal book in the 21st century renaissance of tiki culture.[3][4][5][6][7]

It was one of the few recipes in the book that were the original creations of the authors themselves, the now iconic Jeff "Beachbum" Berry and Annene Kaye.[8][9][10][11][12] It was also featured on the Tonga Hut's checklist[13] of tiki drinks, the Tonga Hut being Los Angeles's oldest Tiki bar established in 1958.[14][15]

The Von Tiki was also included in Berry's subsequent Beachbum Berry Remixed in 2012, with new notations on the drink.[16][17] In the book he indicates that after making so many drinks by Donn Beach that required the use of Donn's elusive "honey mix",[18][19] that they were intrigued to try Bärenjäger in making the Von Tiki.

The name Von Tiki is a reference to fellow tiki officianado Otto von Stroheim[20] as well as the geographic points of origin for the drink's signature ingredients, Stroh rum (Austria) and the Bärenjäger honey liqueur (Germany).[21][22][23] His notes regarding Stroh rum include "[it] is an extremely aromatic Austrian rum that weighs in at 160 proof. It's used mostly in cooking but a few drops really wake up a tired cocktail. Buy the smallest bottle you can find, a little of this stuff goes a long way."[24]

Berry discussed the importance of honoring important early tiki renaissance contributors such as Von Stroheim and Sven Kirsten (author of The Book of Tiki).[25] The drink is categorized as a honey Daiquiri,[26] and having a medium brown appearance with a foamy top.[27]
