This is the period of greatest activity at the site in terms of construction and usage (ritual, domestic, etc). Examples of periods for most of Greece are very roughly:

  • Sub-Mycenean - 1200 to 1100 BCE
  • Dark Age - 1100 to 900 BCE
  • Geometric - 900 to 700 BCE
  • Orientalizing - 7th century BCE
  • Archaic - 6th century BCE to 480 BCE
  • Classical - 480 to 323 BCE
  • Hellenistic - 323 to 30 BCE
  • Early Roman - 146 to 27 BCE
  • Roman Imperial - 27 BCE to 313 CE
  • Late Roman - 313 to 395 CE
  • Byzantine - 395 to 1453 CE

The problem is that each site goes through such periods at different hard dates. The purpose of this line is to give an idea of the peak of a sites development in cultural terms rather than an exact historical date.
