The 75thAnniversary of the Great Victory- is the commemoration day dedicated to the success of the USSR in the 2nd World War, which was officially declared on May,9,1945[1].

Like in all the previous jubilee years, the Governments of the former Soviet Union republics looked forward to organizing ceremonious parades; however, due to the pandemic, the program had to be considerably altered.

Historical background

World War II, which lasted from 1939 to 1945, is considered to be the deadliest one of all times, as it caused an astounding 75-85 million lives[2]. The 8th of May was the happiest day in 1945 as Juri Levitan announced the end of the war.

Celebrations in Russia in 2020

Every year, beginning from 1945, the 9th of May has been a special day for all the former Soviet Republics. Processions wind down every city’s streets, pupils learn poetry dedicated to the Great victory, fireworks go off all over the country. However, in 2020, due to the increased COVID-19 threat, the official date of the festivities was moved. In spite of the unfavorable epidemiological situation in Russia, Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, ordered the traditional demonstration and parade be organized in Moscow at 10.00 a.m. on June, 24, 2020 with some limits[3]. As usual, the event was broadcast on federal channels and on the Internet, although access to Red square was blocked for general public.[4] Military parades in other cities were also being held. While schools were closed because of the lockdown, teachers encouraged students to take part in online events.[5] As always, films about the war, interviews with veterans were shown almost on every TV channel. On most federal TV channels lists of those who perished on the battlefields were constantly demonstrated– an online version of the Immortal Regiment procession, held in the streets of cities over the previous 8 years [6]. Some other CIS countries, such as Belarus[7], Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, did not refuse to celebrate the Victory Day in the traditional way, COVID-19 morbidity rates there being not so high as in Russia.
