Park Chul-Am [1918~2016] is the first climber, explorer, and educator to challenge the Himalayas for the first time in Korea and cross the mysterious Tibetan world.

Life Story

edit

中山 Park Chul-Am (1918.1.8-2016.7.7) was born in Huichon in Korea during the Japanese occupation in 1918, and spent his childhood as a man at Mt. Dongbaek(東白山, 2,096m) in South Pyongan, Korea. When he was 16 years old, the villagers heard the words "There is a broken boat near the rock at the top of Mt. Dongbaek" and fell into the beauty of the mountain for the first time. He couldn't find a broken boat, but in autumn, the pleasure of climbing the mountain along the golden-colored flowers and alpine forest paths motivated him to climb.

In November 1943, He departed to Shenyang on the South Manchurian Railway with the intention of an independence movement under the influence of a senior.

He founded a mountain club of Kyunghee University in 1949, and was appointed professor of Chinese literature at Kyunghee University in 1961. In 1962, he led a mountain club at Kyunghee University and challenged the Dhaulagiri II (7,751m) expedition that no one could ever climb. He climbed the Dhaulagiri II (6,700m) for the first time in Korea and opened the door to the Himalayas. The following year, in 1963, Korea's first exploration report, 'Daulagiri Exploration Journal,' was published. In 1971, he was the Leader of the expedition of Lhotse Shar (8,382m), the first Korean to break through 8,000m and spread the experience of alpine climbing to Korea.

After Korea-China diplomatic relations in 1990, Tibet and Wurenqu expeditions (29th) were conducted, and 500 alpine plants were studied and reported. From 1997 to 2007, he concentrated on exploring Wurenqu (11th), the third pole of the Earth behind the veil, and succeeded in "World's First Crossing Wurenqu 4,600km" in December 2007.

Park Chul-Am, who consistently practiced with the message, "Dream the unknown world and challenge!", passed away at the age of 99 on July 7, 2016.

The records of Park Chul-Am, a pioneer in climbing the Himalayas in Korea and exploring the Wurenqu region in Tibet, are kept in the Kyunghee University Archives and the National Mountain Museum, and Yongdae-Ri in Korea, which was living from 2004 to 2016, has a "Park Chul-Am Museum" It celebrates the spirit of exploration.

The family includes a spouse Kang Jae-yeon (poet), one son, and four daughters.

Climbing History

Opening the first chapter of the Korean Himalayan climber

edit

In 1962, Park Chul-Am led Korea's first mountain climbing meeting, Kyung Hee University, to challenge the first Dhaulagiri II (7,751m) expedition (departing on August 15) to Korea.

Although it did not climb to the targeted Dhaulagiri II, it climbed an unnamed peak (6,700m) at 3 pm on October 11, 1962, which opened a new way for Korean climbing history.

The following year, Korea's first exploration report was published.

A foreign expedition that climbed the Himalayas at the time was organized under the auspices of the state.

It was very unusual and encouraging that a small group of Kyunghee University mountaineering challenged the Himalayan expedition even in the absence of poor domestic circumstances and experience in expeditions abroad.

At Kyunghee University, a memorial space for Dhaulagiri expedition was prepared at Kyunghee University's Natural History Museum to inform students of his challenging spirit.

After that, as a professor of Chinese language and literature at Kyung Hee University, he continued to develop domestic mountain activities as a director of the Korean Mountain Federation and the Korea Special Sports Association while fostering post-secondary studies.

As the expedition to Yushan Mountain (玉山) in 1965, the Northern Alps in Japan in 1967, and the Lhotse Shar (8,382m) expeditionary Leader in 1971, the first Korean climbed 8,000m and spread the experience of early alpine climbing to Korea.

In 1983, Park Chul-Am turned from a climber to an explorer.

He explored the Khumbu Himal with Everest in 1984, the Chosong area that crossed the Kali Gandaki River in 1986, Langtang Himal in 1987, Muktinath Temple in the north of Annapurna in 1988, and Sikkim and Bhutan Himalayas in 1989.

Consequently, he published a photo book <Himalaya BHUTAN TIBET, Sejinsa, 1993> containing the unexplored Himalayan backcountry that preserves the mystery of heaven and earth.

At the time of Lhotse-Shar expedition in 1971, Park Chul-Am saw a flock of geese crossing the skies of Lhotse shar and dreamed of exploring Tibet like Dr. Hedin of Sweden.

After entering Tibet, he made a total of 29 Tibet expeditions from 1990 to 2011.

In addition, he was fascinated by Tibetan flowers and collected, researched, and reported over 500 rare Tibetan flowers and plants, and published <The World's Roof TIBET Flowers, 1998>.

In 1994, the Korea Tibet Research Institute was founded, along with exploration and academic research.

Wurenqu, to a mysterious land

edit

Toze Kangri (6,371m)

In 1996, Park Chul-Am frequently visited the University of Lhasa, Tibet, to learn the scientific names of Tibetan flowers and plants.

Meanwhile, he heard a wonderful story from dean, “There is a land called Wurenqu(無人區) in the northern part of the Changtang Plateau, where people still do not live and no one can jump in.”

The following year, since 1997, he was immersed in exploration of Wurenqu in Tibet, and he was fascinated by the mysterious uninhabited population and studied Wurenqu's rare alpine plants.

In addition, while exploring 10 times from 1997 to over 10 years, he published an exploration book <TIBET 80,000km, Dopiansa, 2002>.

*Wurenqu 無人區

Earth's third pole, wurenqu, is located to the north of Changtang(羌塘) Plateau.

The wurenqu is adjacent to the Kunlun Mountains (2,500 km), the Kekexili Mountains(可可西里) and to the southwest is the Himalayan Mountains (2,400 km), the Gang Tise Mountains(崗底斯), the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains(念青唐古拉), and the Hengduan Mountains(橫斷).

It is an enclosed national forbidden area.

The area is 200,000 km², and the average elevation is 4,500 ~ 5,000m. The average temperature in winter is below -30 ° C.

The Wurenqu crossing expedition consisted of 14 people including Leader Park Chul-Am of Korea, geological survey crew of China, astronomers and doctors.

On December 1, 2007, they had a launching ceremony in Lhasa and set off on a campaign to cross and explore 4,600 km via Yamdrok Lake(羊湖), the northernmost point of Wurenqu.

Departing from the Wurenqu entrance, Longma, heading to the center of Wurenqu along the Zangse Gangri Mountains, arrives on December 10, 2007 at Yamdrok Lake(羊湖 4,778m), a destination in the northwest of Wurenqu.

Then, along the Kirkishri Mountains, through Muztagata(慕士塔格峰) to Yurba Co(涌波錯), and then to Co Nyi(錯尼) -Pamo Panjung(巴毛窃宗) - Qoiden Co(确旦錯), a total of 4,600km of Wurenqu exploration and crossing Successfully finishes.
