The Königsberger Kleinbahn (Königsberg Narrow Gauge Railway) was a narrow gauge railway with two main lines, which connected Königsberg (the capital of East Prussia) with the surrounding districts.

History

edit

In 1899 a railway was built from Labiau to Tilsit via Königsberg, which crossed Samland between the Curonian Lagoon and the River Pregolya, and the government of East Prussia considered it desirable to connect more towns to the rail network. To this end, the governments of the State of Prussia and the Province of East Prussia joined with the railway construction company Lenz & Co. to found the Königsberger Kleinbahn-AG (Königsberg Narrow Gauge Railway Company) on 24 June 1899. A railway network of 59 kilometres to a gauge of 750mm was built.

Both routes began at the edge of the city centre of Königsberg. To the west of the city centre, near the Volksgarten was the goods depot. From there, the line followed the line of the old city walls for 3.8 kilometres to Königstor, where the passenger station was located.

After construction was completed on January 15 1900, the first route connected Königstor via Prawten with the station at Roschino, 16 kilometres away on the border of the region of Wehlau. Here the Königsberg Narrow Gauge Railway was connected to another railway of the same gauge, the Wehlau–Friedländer Kreisbahnen: both railways would later be operated by the Ostdeutschen Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (ODEG). Construction of the second route was completed on June 26 1901. This route connected Prawten with Schaaksvitte on the Curonian Lagoon, a distance of 19 kilometres.

On June 30 1924 the Königsberg Narrow Gauge Railway Company was overtaken by the Insterburger Narrow Gauge Railway; the combined company was subsequently renamed the East Prussian Narrow Gauge Railway Company (Ostpreußische Kleinbahnen AG).

In 1939 7 steam locomotives, 2 railcars, 27 passenger carriages, 4 parcels vans and 111 goods wagons were available for service. After 1928 the company also offered passengers bus services. These connected Königsberg with Saretschye, Salovoye and Schaaksvitte.

During the East Prussian Offensive of 1945 the railway infrastructure was damaged beyond repair and was never rebuilt.
