Lindsay Ruth Embree (1956— Present) is a Canadian printmaker and lithographer born in Goodsoil, Saskatchewan and grew up in Chetwynd, British Columbia.

Education Embree pursued a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at the Kingston University in Ontario and graduated in 1981. Renowned Canadian printmaker Otis Tamsauskas, and Carl Heywood, whom are both lectures at Queens University inspired Embree into her printmaking career. Embree majored as printmaker in the School of Fine Arts and graduated from Queens University with a bachelor’s degree in 1980. Aside from Printmaking, Embree also took interest in drawing, painting, colour theory, sculpture, photography, classical art, art history, and ancient art history classes. Later during her career, Embree furthered her studies, with a concentration in etching, waterless lithography and, traditional stone and plate lithography at the University of Saskatchewan. Embree graduated with a master’s degree in Fine Arts in1988. Embree was enthusiastic about a “primitive and folk” art class that taught her the value in improvising of handmade utility objects “from paintings on the wall to the carpets on the floor” into creative artwork. Embree’s subject matter became more personified than abstract, and carried Australian aboriginal themes, allowing her to “discover and explore [her] personal history.” following her course at Red Deer College, Embree transitioned from paper printing media to textile media in 1997 and learned how to make her “own hand dyed fabrics. During her course at Red Deer College, Embree ‘…was also introduced to the “VIE Colour System,” which is specifically used for printing textiles.’ Embree’s versatility in printing making created opportunities for her to participate in costume designing for theatrics and crafts community in Saskatchewan.

Career Embree’s career began in1980, with knowledge in “intaglio, silk screening and relief printmaking. Between the year1982 and 1997, Embree lectured students at the University of Saskatchewan and managed printmaking, fibre dying, and book binding workshops around Canada, such as the collaborative waterless lithography in Whangarei, New Zealand. During Whangarei biennale collaborations, Embree had the opportunity to build relationship with Multi-award-winning couture designer, Nadine Jaggi, who has worked on films such as The Hobbit, Avatar, and District 9 In 2013, Embree joined the Emma committee, which is responsible for organising weeklong Emma International Collaboration events held annually in “Boreal Forest” of Northern Saskatchewan. Emma hosts the participation of about a 100 diverse artists from around the world who come together to create collaborative artwork of which Embree has attended since 2014. As a costume assistant, Embree was also part of the crew in the making of 21 Seasons of the play, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan. Embree has also participated as an organiser and producer for the Saskatchewan Wearable Art Gala (SWAG) since 2013. Exhibitions Collections of Embree’s work that she has created since 1979 can be located at the Saskatchewan Craft Council and the Handwave Gallery in Meacham, Saskatchewan. In 1998 Embree was invited to her first Emma International Collaboration. According to Embree, her experiences at Emma collaborations have been great source of inspiration for her career. All works created during Emma events are collected at Affinity Gallery. Embree’s pieces are showcased in various national juries across Canada, USA, Norway, Bulgaria, Spain, and the Netherlands at various prestigious events such as Florence Biennale (2009) in Italy.
