Early Life
Tony Oliver was educated at the King Edward VI Grammar School,in ChelmsfordCite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).(2), where he first started refereeing in House games. He seriously bagan his refereeing career in 1949, passing his examination and refereeing in The Chelmsford and Mid Essex League. He was promoted to Class 2 in 1954 and Class 1 in 1956, when he was placed on the Linesmam's List of the Football Combination Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).(3 ,4)He refereed on the Essex and Suffolk Border League Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). (5)in addition to the local leagues. From 1955-57, he served his National Service in the Royal Air Force and was stationed in the West Country. After the Royal Air Force
In 1960, Tony Oliver returned to Essex a year after his National Service, settling in Eastwood, Leigh-on-Sea. He was elevated to the Supplementary Referees List of the Football Combination and to the Full List in 1964. At the same time, he was placed on the Linesmans List of the Football League. In 1968, he was promoted to the Referees List of the Football League after serving the previous four seasons as a linesmanCite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).(8,9). He continued to referee on the Football League until 1974.
