Perkins was originally hired to manage a series of science programs to promote a chain of science supply stores. The pilot programs were broadcast in Central Florida and included children picked from the audience to perform science demonstrations. When the stores closed, Perkins continued to operate the programs as a traveling show.

Perkins' experience in television, radio and print advertising helped popularize the live programs throughout Florida's Spacecoast, an area which is known for it's aerospace and electronics industries. The hour long shows featured simple experiments mixed with odd stories and bizarre stunts. In it's first decade of performances, Mr. Science developed over 50 different presentations covering a multitude of science topics. The live shows were seen throughout the southeast from Florida to Louisiana in schools, malls, libraries, festivals, museums and theaters.
