Okatana

The total population for Okatana location was recorded as 15000 in the 2010 population census carried out by the central Bureau of Statistics. Most of this population lives a traditional, rural existence in villages located along the main roads. The best soils for cultivation are found in the villages that suround Okatana . Mahangu (millet), sorghum and maize are main crops grown. Okatana is surounded by villages, which are Omayanga village, Onawa village, Epyashona village Ekuku village and Epyanene village .It is at the western part of Oshakati , and there is +-5km from Oshakati to Okatana . In Okatana there is a small temporally rive (stream) that have its catchments in Angola and Ombuga . In years of heavy rainfall, these stream flood over an extensive area. It brings fish ,snakes and other reptiles thatlives in water from Angola. It is ever green. Typical of Africa, wealth in rural areas is traditionally invested in cattle which also have a strong social value. Cattle are also used as draught power to plough fields and cattle drawn sleds are still used as a means of transport.
