David Hartt

David Hartt is an African American artist and academician based in Chicago.[1]  He was born in Montréal, Canada, QC in 1967. Hartt acquired BFA in The University of Ottawa and extended his education at School of The Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). After graduating from SAIC, Hartt continued to extend his artistic career. He also worked as an instructor at The school of the Art Institute of Chicago from 2011 to 2014, as a faculty at Milton Avery graduate School of the Arts, Bard College from 2014 to 2015, and as a faculty at Ox-Bow School of Art in 2015. Hartt is a board member an trustee of Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and an assistant professor of department of Fine Arts at the School of Design, University of Pennsylvania.[2]

Artistic Styles

Most of Hartt’s works are based on photography of common places and objects. By investigating a specific place of the environment, Hartt evaluates not only the characteristics of the environment but also relationships between residence, buildings and the environment. Hence, Hartt values the culture of the environment the most when choosing a location for his artworks.[3]

Projects/Exhibitions

Hartt held his first group exhibition at Ten in One Gallery in Chicago in 1994, and his first public solo exhibition took place at Zolla Lieberman Gallery in Chicago in 1995. Hartt’s both solo and group exhibitions mainly take place in United Sates and few countries in Europe. He is known for photography-based projects such as Stray Light and Belvedere.[4]

Awards&Grants

Hartt’s artworks are appreciated in diverse regions with different cultural backgrounds. He received Canada Council Project Grant, Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists, United States Artists Cruz Fellowship, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, Artadia Award, and Art Matters Grant.[5]
