William Burke Belknap, the elder (1811 - 1887 or February 24, 1889), born in Brimfield, Massachusetts, was the son of Morris Burke Belknap (c. 1789 - 1807) and Phoebe Locke Thompson (c. 1788 - 1807) and grandson of William Belknap (1740 – 1820) and Anna Burk (c. 1740 or 1748 - 1820). According to most accounts William Burke Belknap, the elder's father Morris Burke Belknap the elder was born June 25, 1780 in Brimfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, United States, where he ran an iron foundry and died July 26, 1877 in Smithland, Livingston, Kentucky. With his sons William Richardson Belknap (1849 - 1914) and Morris Burke Belknap (1856 - 1910), Morris Burke Belknap the elder established the Belknap Hardware and Manufacturing Company on the banks of the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky. William Burke Belknap, the elder, and his two sons are listed in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census as "iron merchants."
He was one of the six founders of Louisville, Kentucky's Cave Hill Cemetery.

From Brimfield, Massachusetts to Kentucky
editBirth 25 JUN 1780 in Brimfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, United States Death 26 JUL 1877 in Smithland, Livingston, Kentucky, United States??? what was his relationship to William Belknap and/or William G. Belknap? Apparently neither, since their dates don't seem to coincide with those of his family members. Possibly extended relationship.
