Ovituua Reserve Village

General description:

Ovituua is a reserve village in the Epukiro settlement, which is the district capital of the Epukiro Constuency. It is located in the Omaheke Region in Namibia on the African continent. Ovituua is approximately 400 km from the capital city of Namibia, Windhoek. The village's luscious trees and bushes are used by the Ovaherero people for lifestock breeding. Ovituua has abpproximately 18 households which make up an estimated population of 150 people. There is currently no electricity supply in Ovituua and the water supply is fairly stable. Ovituua is approximately 20km from it's neighbouring village, Otjimanangombe. The latter village is where part of The German Genocide against the Ovaherero people took place, at a location now commonly referred to as Omuhaturua.

Inhabitants:

The inhabitants of this reserve originate from the Ovambanderu decent, which is a faction of the Ovaherero people who reside in Namibia and Botswana. People from this decent are distinguished from the rest of the Ovaherero community on the basis of where they reside, namely Epukiro. There are however quite a number of minority cultures also residing in the Ovituua reserve, the San or khoi-khoi and Ovazemba people.

Climate:

The climate is mostly sunny and dry, welcoming heavy rains. Ovituua is therefore the ideal place for agricultural production, especially lifestock breeding.

Sport:

The most prestigious and common sport played in Ovituua is Football. The village is well- known for hosting end-of-the-year inter-village soccer tournaments and for being home to members of the Indande soccer team.

Transportation:

The residents of Ovituua can be seen travelling mostly by foot, horses, donkeys, and most uncommonly, cars. This is because of the remoteness of the village.

Notable residents:

Ovituua is home to members of one of the pioneer groups of Oviritje traditional music in Namibia, The Ongoronomundu Yoruvanda Concert Group. This group won an award in the best oviritje category of the Sanlam Namibian music awards for their well-known song, Ahi-Ahi in 2006.

Ovituua is also home to prominent individuals, like Lawrence, Nunuu Kaimu who is a senior official in the Cabinet Secretariat within the Government of Namibia.

The co-manager and founding member of The Morukonjo Oviritje group, Mutjina Hoveka is als a notable resident of this viallage.
