Brief History

edit

Newtownabbey Methodist Mission (incorporating North Belfast Mission) was founded in 1898 on York Street, Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Past Outreach

edit

The Mission has provided outreach to the community around it since it was first established. In the early 1900's they often brought the children from the surrounding area to solariums, important in these times as diets were poor and the children needed other ways of getting Vitamin D introduced to their bodies.

In later years the Mission also provided a holiday to the seaside for many children. Originally they were brought to Ballyholme near Bangor, Northern Ireland. Holidays were then moved to Portrush on the North-West Coast of Northern Ireland. These holidays continued until the 1990's, by which stage the children were brought to a dis-used school with classrooms converted to dormatories.
