Trevor McDonald

Hi,

Sorry about the source problems. I was not trying to say that they played the wrong music for several years at all - it's a complicated story but I'll try to simplify it. McDonald became the sole presenter of ITN's News at Ten and hosted it from 1992 to 1999. Coinciding with McDonald's promotion to NAT in 1992, the bulletin underwent a major retooling and its theme music was rearranged and recorded. The combination of authoritative newsreader and powerful music led these two attributes to be forever associated with each other. NAT was axed in 1999, and obviously the music went along with it to the dustbin. On McDonald's last ITN bulletin before his January 2005 retirement, the News at Ten Thirty, they played the 1992-1999 NAT theme instead of the then-current ITV News music, as a tribute to him, because he was so associated with the famous music. PM vacation in Southwold

Why did you delete the fact that the PM went on vacation to Southwold. You claim it is not a notable event. How is some minor b list having a house in the area a thing that should be included on the page, yet the PM going on vacation to the area where from which he made important decisions on how to run the country, where he was co-ordinating government polci from. How is that not an important historical fact for the town. In my town if the PM went on vacation for a few weeks to my town it would be a major major historical event for thwe town. Are you just a tory who desires to delete history that involes people you do not like. That is immature. Pleae explain why it is not an important fact for town that a leader of the nation went on vacation for weeks and made government polcy there, in what is not a very big city. That is a major event for the area, and was reported in the press. OK then The media did report it as a vacation Soutwold. But it does seem a bit unfair. The vacation was seen as a vacation to Southwold in major papers such as Time. See here. http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1827401,00.html Surely this is like saying you live in London if you live a few miles from there. How do we know many of the people mentioed on the page are only living in the area, is i likely Bill Night ows a home in the direct centre of thwe town. To be honest I would still note it on the history of the town. If someone of international importance holidayed near my town and it was reported in major papers as a holiday to my town it is surely a important event. I has never even heard of the town before this. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

Motto of the day

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.
