Camp Piomingo is a co-ed, overnight summer camp located within Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area in Brandenburg, KY. The camp has been open for over 80 years and holds one to two week programs for kids ages 6–16. Along with programs for children, Camp Piomingo offers off season mini camps for the entire family.

History

edit

Camp Piomingo opened its gates in 1938, making this summer its 81st year and running. The camp itself sits on over 150 acres of land within Otter Creek.[1] In 2009, Otter Creek Park was closed due to the state losing money trying to keep it up, since Camp Piomingo is within Otter Creek this slightly affected the camp. The closure of the park made the state review Camp Piomingo's lease which runs through 2035 with a possible extension of 25 years.

Seasonal mini-camps

edit

There are a variety of mini-camps that happen throughout the year including:

Winter Camp- Campers have the opportunity to see Camp Piomingo in a new light while doing traditional holiday activities like decorating cookies, and drinking hot chocolate by the fire. During this particular mini camp kids stay in the heated mess hall instead of normal cabin, but still get to do the activities offered in the summer.

Spring Break Camp- Feeling more like traditional camp, campers stay in cabins and get to be the first to do normal summer camp activities like high ropes, zip line and hiking.

Derby Camp- The weekend of the Kentucky Derby campers can come and enjoy many of the same activities they can do in the summer and also celebrate the horse races through arts and crafts and derby food.[3]
