My long-standing research investigates the translation-transmission of content across boundaries of culture .. particularly during moments of tremendous social transformation, such the current transition from material to digital environments. My recent interest focuses upon the way systems of authority respond to increasingly democratic access to knowledge.

From 2003 through 2005, my focus was the translatio of religious content across medieval geographies of culture, language and thought - particularly the evolutionary historicity of Zen Buddhism; Jewish domestic religious practice and its vernacular transmission as conveyed through the Minhogimbukh (Venice, 1593); and the translatio of Sephardic and Islamic intellectual cultures during the political upheavals in medieval Spain.

I am an occassional Buddhist monk, and professor of philosophy.
