Votes listed on this page are only of the first count voting, together with the final outcome of election, or non-election. The Labour Party won the elections with 268 out of the 462 total seats in councils and 48 out of the 68 mayors. No voting was held in Mdina, which was won by the Nationalists.

Electoral system edit

Malta elects 462 local council seats around for 68 local councils every five years, using the single transferable vote system. This is important when it comes to interpreting the results tables below.

Number of seats in councils edit

The Act on Local Government, passed in 1993 by a Nationalist government, allocates council seats by total population quantity:[1]

Locality population Total Councillor seats in Council
< 500 FIVE (5)
≥ 5000 but < 10,000 SEVEN (7)
≥ 10,000 but < 15,000 NINE (9)
≥ 15,000 but < 20,000 ELEVEN (11)
