Khayyám's 11th Century Poetry
  • O cleric, we are more active than you
  • even so drunk, we are more attentive than you
  • You drink the blood of men, we drink the blood of grapes [wine]
  • Be fair, which one of us is more bloodthirsty?

  • Am I a wine-bibber? What if I am? /
  • Gueber or infidel? Suppose I am? /
  • Each sect miscalls me, but I heed them not / هر طایفه ای ز من گمانی دارد
  • I am my own, and, what I am, I am /

  • And if the Wine you drink, the Lip you press, /
  • End in the Nothing all Things end in — Yes — /
  • Then fancy while Thou art, Thou art but what / چون عاقبت كار جهان نيستى است
  • Thou shalt be — Nothing — Thou shalt not be less. /
