Fort Smith (St. Joseph, MO) was a Union fortification located in Saint Joseph, Missouri during the Civil War. Located in the northwest corner of the City, the fort overlooks the Missouri River. The location was recently purchased by the City of Saint Joseph from D.D.E. Enterprises, Inc. for the amount of $85,000.

History Fort Smith was erected in September of 1861 by the 16th Illinois Regiment under the command of Colonel Robert Smith. The fort was complimented by 2,000 Union troops and 12 cannon, and remained in operation until the spring of 1863. The fort never saw combat.
