Kiril Conev , Кирил Цонев (*1st Januar 1896, Kyustendil, Bulgaria; † 5th April 1961,Sofia, Bulgaria), was a Bulgarian painter, teacher and critic. Kiril Conev studied in various institutions around Europe, including the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. From 1925 to 1940 he was a leading member of the National Art Society of Bulgaria. Later, in 1945, he became an art critic and a professor of painting at the National Academy of Arts in Sofia (1945-1950). Kiril Conev is considered to be one of the best Bulgarian painters of his time in Germany.

Biography

Kiril Conev was born in Kyustendil, Bulgaria, on 1st Januar 1896 and died in Sofia, Bulgaria on 5th April 1961. In 1915, at the age of 19, he went to Sofia, where he studied at the National Academy of Arts at Professor Zeno Todorov. After that he moved to Vienna, where he studied for one year at the "Akademie der Bildenden Künste", from 1920 to 1921. In 1922 he went to Munich, where, under Hugo von Habermann and Karl Caspar, he studied at the "Akademie der Bildenden Künste" until 1925. Munich was, together with Vienna, the main point of interest for Bulgarian painters at this time.

In 1925 he went to Spain and, as he returned to Munich, he presented his work at the "Brakls Kunsthaus". The opening of his exhibition was on 1st June 1925.
