edit

Its a brief history of Mahar caste in Uttarakhand that some times people confuse with Mahar of Maharashtra. So at the outset lets start with some major differences between the two Mahar of Uttarakhand are a Rajput clan which are found both in Kumaon and Garhwal regions while those in Maharashtra are considered marshal race and a Dalit lineage of which Dr. BR Ambedkar was the forerunner.

Lets start first with a brief about Uttarakhand. It is a hilly state of Northern India that was initially part of United Provinces and later bifurcated as a separate state in 2003. Uttarakhand was initially a westward extension of Nepal until Treaty of Saguli was signed and bifurcated from Nepal. Now it is composed of 13 districts divided broadly into hilly region and plains or terai.

Particularly notable in this aspect are Mahar of Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand where their numbers are in majority and represent mainly in Politics and Sports apart from Armed Forces Health and other civil sectors. They reside mainly in Naini region near Naini Saini Airport and Kumour.

Surprisingly Mahar are also found in Ireland and constitute a notable number there.
