Constantin Budeanu was a Romanian electrical engineer born in 1886 in Buzău, known for his contributions to metrology and SI system of units.

Early life

1903-1908 he studied the National School of Bridges and Highways in Bucharest, earning his engineering diploma in 1908. He then began to study electricity with a V Adamachi scholarship in Paris.

He began work at the Romanian Railways workshops and the Bucharest Tram Society after returning home from studies abroad. Budeanu soon became technical director of the Electrical Society in Bucharest.

In 1916 became professor of Electrical Measurements and Electrical Engineering in the Electricity and Electrical Engineering department of the National School of Bridges and Highways, beeing assistent to Nicolae Vasilescu Karpen.

Member in learned societies

He was elected as corresponding member (1938) and full member (1955) of the Romanian Academy He was active in many international scientific societies like the

  • Société Française d`Electriciens and the
  • Conférence Internationale des Grands Réseaux Electrique (CIGRE) for which he served as vice-president and then president of Committee No.16 for the Study of Reactive and Deformed Phenomena (1935-1959).

Contributions

Budeanu proposed “Var” for the reactive power unit in the Système Internationale.

He promotedted the rationalized MKSA system of base measurement units[1].

Recognition

IEEE ICHPS VI (International Conference on Harmonics in Power Systems VI), Bologna, 21-23 September 1994, was dedicated to his memory.

Awards

CIGRE awarded him the Gratitude Medal in 1946.
