married Edgar Major Newhouse, a railway clerk.[1] Son John Patrick Newhouse

as Miss N. Magee[4]

elected councillor for St. Charles Ward, following the resignation of E.T. Newell, in 1945.[5]

"a stalwart of the Labour movement" and and ex-Borough Councillor, of Methwold Road, North Kensington, died last week at the age of 74.[6] Mrs. Newhouse came to London from Ireland in 1915, and joined the Labour Party in Hammersmith, three years later. She was the first woman councillor to be elected to Hammersmith Borough Council in 1919 and served until 1922 when she moved to Kensington.

Mrs. Newhouse was co-opted as a Labour member to Kensington Council during the war (in 1942) when elections were suspended. She was re-elected for Norland Ward in 1946, but did not seek re-election in 1949.

During her period on the Council Mrs. Newhouse served on various committees, including the Public Health Committee which was perhaps nearest her heart, for her interests always lay in Child Welfare, Hospital work and Child Care committees. She was a member, and at one time Chairman of the Management Committee of St. Charles’ Hospital from 1936 until the time of her death, and during her service was always keenly interested in the welfare of the hospital staff. She was also greatly interested in Youth Club work, and was a School Manager and Governor of many North Kensington Schools.

Mrs. Newhouse was a member of the Co-operative Party and the Women’s Co-operative Guild for 30 years, and attended the West London Ethical Church in Kensington High Street.

The cremation which took place on Wednesday at Kensal Green was attended by representatives of North Kensington Labour Party. Mrs. Newhouse leaves a husband and one son. Lived at 5 Methwold Road, Kensington.
