Collagen is a structural protein, often referred to as “the steel of biological materials” (Y.C. Fung). There are three main types of collagen: Type I (comprising skin, tendons and ligaments, vasculature and organs, as well as teeth and bone); Type II (EXAMPLES); and Type III (EXAMPLES).

Industrial Usage/Applications

Natural fiber composites

Natural fibers are also used as reinforcement in composites. These biocomposites have been in used as early as 1896 in airplane seats. Current uses for biocomposites include secondary and tertiary structures and features where idealized mechanical properties are not critical.
