The Missouri State Archives is the official repository for the records of the State of Missouri. The Archives was established by the legislature in 1965.[1]</ref> Prior to it creation, most materials were retained by the state departments and agencies while some materials related to state government were placed with the State Historical Society of Missouri.[2]

The Archives is part of the Office of the Missouri Secretary of State where it is part of a Record Services Division that includes the Missouri State Archives, the Local Records Preservation Program and the Records Management Division. All three of these sections are managed by the Missouri State Archivist.[3]

Records held by the Archives date from 1770 to the present and include executive, legislative, and judicial records. Included in the Archives holdings are over: 336 million pages of paper; 400,000 photographs; 9,000 maps; 61,000 reels of microfilm, and 560 cubic feet of published state documents.[4]
