Life of Seyyid Nusret Ali Han Dehlevî
editSeyyid Nusret Ali Han was born in 1852 in the city of Delhi, India, as the son of Seyyid Mehmed Emin Ed-Din Efendi. It is known that he received education in Delhi, where he learned technical subjects such as geography, chemistry, and mathematics, as well as Urdu, Persian, and English languages. Additionally, it is recorded that he had a library containing historical, geographical, and literary works written in various languages.[1]
During the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878, Seyyid Nusret Ali Han participated in efforts to gather support for the Ottomans among Muslims in India. However, his journalistic activities came to an end due to the reaction of the British government. Before heading to Istanbul, Nusret Ali Han is noted to have arrived in the city with a declaration pledging obedience and financial assistance to the caliph. Operating the Peyki Islam newspaper in Istanbul, Nusret Ali Han was known for his Pan-Islamic tendencies, but his newspaper was soon closed. Various works were printed in the "Nusret Press," the printing house of the newspaper, and donations were made to the newspaper by Grand Vizier Küçük Said Pasha during this time. Additionally, it is observed that the Ottoman Empire expressed a desire to penetrate British India to compensate for the losses suffered during the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878. After arriving in Istanbul, Nusret Ali Han, who served in the Ministry of Education, married a Turkish woman and had a daughter named Ferdane.[1]
