• Enquiry held at Nisi Prius Court, Bristol Guildhall, 23 May 1888:
  • Gloucestershire QS approved of Bristol being constituted a separate co.
  • JPs of Long Ashton div of Som. wanted eccl dist of Bishopsworth should remain in Som., but all other pts of Bedminster CP should be included in Bristol.
  • Bristol Corp approved of reccs. to add the pt of Bedminster in parl bor but not MB to MB. by 37 to 18 votes. The minority wanted a larger extension to include all phs and pts of phs in parl. bor: Co pt of Westbury-on-Trym, pt of Henbury ph, Shirehampton CP, Leigh Wodds area of Long Ashton.
  • Bedminster BoG wanted the whole of Bedminster CP incl in Bristol. They had earlier suggested leaving out the largely rural bishopsworth area of the ph, but now felt it should be included because it was likely to be built over, and had a "commnunity of interest" with the city.
  • Deputation from Bishopworth and Knowle supported the original proposal to leave them ut of city.
  • Bristl Incorp and Barton Regis BoG had agreed a "Greater Bristol" with bdys much wider thgan those proposed by BC.
  • Bristol Incorp for poor wanted to take in Leigh Woods, which lay on the other side of Suspension Bridge, should be in city. Asst Commr thought the bdy was insurmountable

Rottherham PLU

One Derbyshire parish (Beighton) lay in the PLU. The YWRHC suggested its transfer to another Derbyshire PLU, therby preserving the county boundary.

Doncaster PLU

The Lincolnshire parish of Misson was included in the PLU. YWRHC sought its transfer to the riding.

Goole PLU

Two Lincolnshire parishes (Garthorpe and Luddington) lay in the PLU. West Riding Highway Committee sought their transfer to the county.

Thorne PLU

Eight Lincolnshire parishes (Althorpe, Amcotts, Belton, Crowle (USD), Eastoft, Epworth, Keadby, Wroot) lay in the PLU. W Riding Highway Ctte sought transfer of part of this area, up to the River Trent, to the W Riding.

The Notts parishes of Auckley and Finningley lay in the PLU. WR HC sought transfer of area to YWR.

Selby PLU

East Riding parishes of Barlby, Cliffe, Kelfield, North Duffield, Osgodby, Riccal, Skipwith, South Duffield lay in the PLU. County boundary to be maintained on the River Ouse, necessitating the splitting of the area.

Great Ouseburn PLU

A number of YNR parishes (Ellenthorpe, Helperby, Humberton (part), Kirby Hill, Langthorpe, Milby (part), Norton-le-Clay, Shipton, Thornton Bridge, Tollerton, Youlton) lay in the PLU. The boundary was felt to be "inconvenient". The county boundary was to be fixed at the River Ouse.

Ripon PLU

YNR parishes (Asenby, Baldersby, Cundall with Leckby, Dishforth, East Tanfield, Ellenthorpe, Howgrave, Hutton Conyers, Marton-le-Moor, Melmerby, Middleton Quernhow, Norton Conyers, Rainton with Newby, Sutton with Howgrave, Thornton Bridge, Wath, West Tanfield). Guardians wanted boundary to be fixed at R Swale, R Ure, so whole union in W Riding.

  • Kidderminster PLU: BoG reffered to an earlier resolution for the transfer of Upper Arley from Staffs and Dowles, Salop to Worcs. They objected to a proposal by Shropshire justices to transfer Bayton and Rock (Cleobury Mortimer PLU) to their union: Birmingham Daily Post, November 23, 1887.

Assistant commissioners' meetings

• Hon. T S Pelham met with West Riding Highway Committee, Wakefield. Committee suggested the PLUs and USDs on the boundary should be treated as follows:
  • Lincs parishes Goole PLU included in YWR.
  • Part of Thorne PLU in Lincs to YWR: boundary to the R Trent
  • Doncaster PLU: Notts parishes of auckley and Finningley, and the Notts pt of Milsom to YWR
  • Worksop PLU: no decision
  • Rotherham PLU: the Derbyshire ph in the area should go to a Derbys PLU
  • Eccleshall PLU: no decision on 4 Derbys phs in the union: might need special inquiry
  • Mossley USD: in three counties - no decision reached
  • Todmorden USD: Lancs pt should go to YWR
  • Clitheroe PLU: no decision
  • Selby PLU: county bdy with YER should be maintained on the R Ouse
  • York PLU: very complicated as in three Ridings

  • Liberty of Ripon: should be remedied.

• Pelham met justices of Liberty of Ripon. YWR likely to become the county authority. if the Ouse was made the boundary, as sugested at Gt Ouseburn, it would divide the liberty.
