Evaluate an article
editThis is where you will complete your article evaluation. Please use the template below to evaluate your selected article.
- Name of article: (link)
- Briefly describe why you have chosen this article to evaluate.
- I'm Mexican and eating Rosca is a yearly tradition my family has. It was interesting to see that it didn't have that much written about given how common it is to eat in many countries. I want to see if its a topic I'm interested in writing more about.
Lead
edit- Guiding questions
- Does the Lead include an introductory sentence that concisely and clearly describes the article's topic?
- Yes, the sentence is really clear in informing the readers that it is a type of bread dish which I think is the main idea. It also covers which countries eat it.
- Does the Lead include a brief description of the article's major sections?
- Not a brief description, but it has a contents box which leads to the article's major sections. For example, the sections in this case are the variation, gallery, "see also," references, bibliography, and external links.
- Does the Lead include information that is not present in the article?
- No, everything that is covered in the lead is then covered again in the rest of the article.
- Is the Lead concise or is it overly detailed?
- It is really concise. I think it does a great job of explaining what information is going to be covered in the rest of the article. It is evident what topics they tried to expand on. I think the "Contents" box is also really helpful in helping them stay concise.
Lead evaluation
edit- I think the lead does a great job of providing an introduction to Rosca. The lead is really clear about what topics are going to be covered in the rest of the article.
Content
edit- Guiding questions
- Is the article's content relevant to the topic?
- Yes, all the written content is relevant to the topic.
- Is the content up-to-date?
- From what I know about Rosca personally, yes, the content is up-to-date. However, looking at the sources, some are nearly 30 years old so there might be some information might have changed. But for the most part, the content still looks up to date.
- Is there content that is missing or content that does not belong?
- I think all the content present belongs. It is all relevant and covers the topic. However, I think it can be more detailed. For example, given that there is a religious connotation to it, I see how added a section about its religious ties could be interesting. I also think it would be interesting to go more into depth about how different countries celebrate with Rosca and the meaning they ascribe to it.
Content evaluation
edit- I think all the content present is great and relevant. As I mentioned above, I see the opportunity to add different topics to the content.
Tone and Balance
edit- Guiding questions
- Is the article neutral?
- Yes, I think the tone of this article is neutral.
- Are there any claims that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
- No, there aren't any claims that appeared biased toward a position. The tone is really straightforward and informational.
- Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
- No, this topic is really straightforward, Unlike an academic article, where I think it would be important to include critic opinions, this topic doesn't really have opposing views. The only viewpoints I can think of is maybe what people in different countries have to say about it.
- Does the article attempt to persuade the reader in favor of one position or away from another?
- No, the article has no form of persuasion.
Tone and balance evaluation
edit- I think the content has a very neutral tone and doesn't try to persuade the readers in any direction.
Sources and References
edit- Guiding questions
- Are all facts in the article backed up by a reliable secondary source of information?
- Yes, most of the sources are published book, but some of the sources are also cookbooks.
- Are the sources thorough - i.e. Do they reflect the available literature on the topic?
- A lot of the sources used are books that cover many types of bread. Therefore, rosca only appears on certain pages of the book for a sentence or two. But, I think the information that is available in these few pages are accurate.
- Are the sources current?
- No, the sources aren't current. The oldest source is nearly 30 years and the most recent is 15 years old. I think this leaves a lot of room for me to dig into more up-to-date literature and see how it compares to what is already written.
- Check a few links. Do they work?
- Yes. I checked all the links and all but one lead to a viewable google book. One of them isn't available to see online.

Overall impressions
edit- Guiding questions
- What is the article's overall status?

- I would say the article is underdeveloped. I wouldn't say it is poorly developed because what is there is good, but as I've said, I think there's room to expand.
